Our Class Family is just that- a family! We work together, learn together, and even attend each other's extra-curricular activities in support of each other. Our Class Family is filled with students from a variety of backgrounds and socioeconomic status levels.
We have members of our Class Family who have special needs including ADHD, English Language Learners, challenging family dynamics, and mental health challenges; we are seeking support so that we can add books from our wish list to our classroom library.
We love our class family and just want to be able to support each other in the best way that we can!
Our Class Family of little learners has a love for reading and learning about the world around us. We would love to be able to dive into new texts that can help us learn and grow!
My Project
This project hits very close to home. Growing up as a student myself, the classroom libraries that surrounded me never seemed to have many characters in stories who looked like me. I grew up to see this as the "norm" and it more or less came as a surprise to me if there was a character in a book who did look like me. In addition, I grew up in a school environment where there weren't any multicultural teachers. I never even thought it was possible that I could become a teacher because there weren't any examples in my environment or any examples in books that I read.
Books are powerful because they can mirror a reflection of ourselves or serve as a door that provides an opportunity to learn something new or shift our perspective.
All students deserve to experience texts that reflect themselves and who they are; it is important that they are represented. This project will allow our classroom library to become more diversified in the characters who are represented in the texts. Students who identify with multicultural backgrounds will be able to experience more "mirror" texts that are a reflection of themselves. Students who identify with different cultural backgrounds will be able to experience texts that are a "door" for them to learn from a new perspective. As a result, all students will experience rich literature to support their growth and development!
