Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a second year NYC Teaching Fellow, I have practiced multicultural education with my students. I have witnessed the transformation of students when they learn about cultures. Students need to be able to explore different countries, religions, societies, histories, and social justice issues through independent reading and literature studies. However, the availability of excellent multicultural literature is limited.
I would like to develop a multicultural literature circles curriculum for my third class at PS 218 in the Bronx. The practice of literature circles allows students to read independently, while making personal connections with the characters and events within the literature. Students will meet with me three times a week to discuss their relationship to the literature and analyze its relevance to our community. Literature circles have proven to foster critical thinking skills, as well as reading comprehension skills. In addition, the multicultural literature circles will expose the students to historical and social issues that are relevant to their daily life.
The materials necessary for multicultural literature circles is an extensive collection of books representing the minority groups within the United States and the global community. Because of the design of literature circles, the class is divided into four groups with six students in each group, with each group is reading a different book. Books are selected on the students' reading level and the appropriateness of the literature. The literature rotates from group to group every 2-4 weeks, depending on the discussions during the literature circles.
My educational and personal philosophy stresses the importance of multiculturalism in schools. If students are not exposed to the realities of our country and the world, they will not be prepared to encounter society with a diversified education. With this knowledge, they will be able to participate as productive citizens. Multicultural literature circles will afford the opportunity to examine the lives of others and themselves. It is a challenge worth accomplishing.
