My Students
I teach second grade English Language Arts (ELA) at Lewis Elementary and I work with students who are intelligent, creative, energetic and diverse. The students in my class are eager to learn and enhance their skills in reading and writing! More than half of the students who attend Lewis come from low-income households.
My Project
As a second grade English Language Arts teacher I pride myself on developing a love of reading in my students and I believe that it is important for children to be able to relate to the books they read and the characters they grow to love. Literature that celebrates diversity teaches young children that it’s okay to express themselves and embrace their culture and cultural differences. Forty-five percent of the student population at our school is African American and I believe that it is important for young children to see their culture and race represented in the books they read at school.
