Multicultural Cinderellas and Cinderfellas in Music Class
My project needs 4 copies each of Cinderella and Cinderfella stories from eight distinct cultures.

I am the music teacher to over 600 enthusiastic young musicians at 2 elementary schools in the south side of Chicago. The student population at the schools is diverse and representative of Chicago. Music classes for students in grades K-8 include singing, dancing, and performing on instruments in addition to listening to and evaluating music. I also teach students about the theoretical and historical aspects of music at an age appropriate level.
Students in grades 3-8 study opera as part of their general music course. This year I will teach students about the opera Cinderella (La Cenerentola) by Gioachino Rossini. The opera is similar to the familiar Cinderella story, however in order to prepare students for listening to the music and watching selections of the opera I intend to have students read and analyze the children's book Cinderella from cultures around the world. This will be done in order to highlight how timeless the themes of love, jealousy, and family are across time and culture. The books will be used during a unit on the opera Cinderella, and they will be used during group activities to illustrate themes in the opera and stories. One common theme in all these stories is that there is a "fairy godmother" figure who looks out for Cinderella. However, in all these stories the godmother takes a different form that is appropriate to that culture. For example, in Ireland she appears as a cow. In China she is a fish. She appears as a culturally relevant form in all the tales.
For this proposal I am requesting 4 copies of each student book. The student books will be shared between students at both of my schools. The books include stories of Cinderellas and Cinderfellas from Mexico, Alaska, Africa, Ireland, China, the Caribbean, and the Middle East. The requested items will be used in lessons planned along the National Music Education Standards and will be reused by music students at my schools for years. Thank you for your generosity!
