Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are very diverse; over 70% of our population is Hispanic. They are very eager to learn English and prove their knowledge through reading and writing. Just over seventy percent of our school district also receives free or reduced-price lunch.
Our students have dedicated teachers to not only teach them a new language, but also the Common Core academic standards.
Students are able to strive and do their best in the classroom because they are comfortable and know our school is a safe and rewarding place. Although school can be a challenging place for some of our students, they always come with smiles on their faces because they feel welcome here.
My Project
These sets of leveled books will be put in our elementary book rooms. Classroom teachers, reading teachers, ELL teachers, and Special Education teachers will use these books daily for differentiated guided reading lessons. When we have books at students instructional levels, we are able to pinpoint their reading needs and help them become stronger readers by working at their level.
Our book room needs more mirror books - where our students are seeing themselves as the characters in the books, instead of window books where they are looking out into someone else's life.
These multicultural leveled texts will help our students connect to the stories, have stronger background knowledge, and in return, deeper comprehension skills which is exactly what a strong reader needs.
