I teach students who come from all over the world and who long to see themselves in the pages of the books we read. The lack of representation of multilingual and multicultural characters in mainstream literature is a sad reality in many educational systems.
My goal for this project is to begin to build a library for students that includes books representing cultures from all over the world, so that my students may have an opportunity to identify with characters and make text-to-self connections.
My students have been through so much. In addition to the obstacles of leaving a home and settling into a new country, my students have had the added challenge of learning a new language. I want to read them stories about where they are from, so they may feel pride in their histories and feel motivated to develop as readers.
