My students need to see themselves represented in education. They benefit from having access to children literature that mirror them, their loved ones, their history and their celebrations. We need Shades of People, I Love My Hair! and Diego.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Kindergarteners are unique students. They begin their school adventure excited about the possibilities, yet nervous about the unknown; happy about reaching a growth milestone, yet sad about missing their families at home. The excitement, nervousness and happiness can quickly fade in those first few days, but the sadness can begin to surmount. The challenge for the Kindergarten teacher is to keep their students engaged by creating an environment where the students take ownership of their classroom space... all while creating a fun and inquisitive environment for students to excel and grow.
My students attend a Title I school district with a high rate of poverty.
Our entire building qualifies for free breakfast and free lunch.
Giving students ownership of their classroom space, keeps them invested and accountable for their own learning. They love to have access to resources and learning materials with their names written on them.
My Project
Research shows students who live in low-income areas enter Kindergarten knowing 15,000 words less than their middle-class income peers. In order to narrow the gap, students need constant exposure to words and language. Literature provides the perfect opportunity for students to learn new terms, ideas, languages and more. When students can make personal connections to the literature, they are more engaged, inquisitive, intrigued and vested in their learning. They hold themselves accountable when they can claim ownership of their learning. Although my school is culturally & racially diverse, most books available do not reflect the diversity of the student population.
I would like for my students to be able to see themselves, their loved ones, their peers, their languages and their celebrations represented in the books they are learning to read.
When they see themselves in their learning materials, they gain a sense of ownership and accountability to their classrooms, their school system, their community and the world.
