Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach first grade in Richmond, California. My students come from diverse families with a rich cultural history. First grade is an exciting year when children learn to read. I would love multicultural books that represent the cultures my students come from. I am asking for a variety of multicultural books that are quality literature. These books will help my students develop self esteem and feel empowered by seeing people of their culture represented in books. Children will be more motivated to read when they feel the books are valuable to their lives. Also, my students will learn and appreciate other cultures and communities through reading these books. Children's books can help children develop positive self concept by seeing people of their culture reflected positively in stories. Stories where children of diversity are positive role models will help students feel their culture is valued and acknowledged in the classroom community. Children love to experience life through literature and multicultural books will help them live vicariously through children of different cultures. Children will learn and appreciate the shared values and experiences between cultures. These books would be a great addition to our classroom library and I know my students will enjoy them immensely. These books will be available for the students to read in their spare time and take home to enjoy with their families. I will also use the books during reading groups. Thank you for you help!
