Students benefit from having multicultural books in a classroom because they give opportunties for students to understand diverse cultures locally and around the world.
When young readers see their own culture and experiences represented in literature, it fosters positive self-identity, promotes cultural awareness, and helps diverse students feel more at home in the learning environment.
Students that feel a sense of belonging in a classroom have a greater likliehood of growing confident in their reading and critical thinking skills. This can impact a student positively for the rest of their life.
My classroom is located in the Verde Valley, AZ, home of the soveriegn Yavapai Apache Nation. Further, there are 22 federally recognized sovereign indigenous tribes in the state of Arizona, many of which are represented at our school. Our community also has a large number of English Language Learners (ELL) from many cultures that attend our school.
I am excited to announce that I am taking on a new challenge for the 2024-2025 school year as the 4th grade ELL teacher. Unfortunately, as a newer teacher, my current classroom library is underrepresented of many of the cultures that will be present in my classroom next year. I greatly desire to respect and reach all of my students, so they can become strong, confident readers and have a positive sense of self. The books I have selected for this project include a wide range of indigenous perspectives locally and across North America as well as diverse cultures across the entire globe.
Thank you for your consideration to make this project a great success!
