My Students

My students are eager learners and can’t wait to get into the classroom every day to greet me with their smiling faces. We are a Title 1 school where free and reduced lunch is offered to 100% of our students and many have all 3 meals a day at school. Coming from a variety of diverse economic and cultural backgrounds, we come together as a classroom community, ready and excited to learn from each other every day. Each student and the perspectives they contribute are valuable members of our community.

My Project

In order for my amazing students to see themselves represented in our classroom everyday, I need more multicultural books and art supplies. Kids need books and resources that they see themselves represented in as well as that allow them to see a representation of many people, races, cultures, religions and values. As students become engaged in multicultural books they will feel culturally included and empowered.

As a third grade teacher I strive to enhance our curriculum with books and projects that promote social justice and anti-bias views.

During a crucial time in our country, books can be sources that provide current, relevant and accurate information for our kids. I specifically teach about a range of leaders that have used their platform and voice to create change in the areas of civil, human, women and immigration rights. Having a variety of classroom books and and art supplies equip us for the many projects throughout the year. Examples of projects I have incorporated in our classroom to encourage students to create their own change are through collaborative murals and writing a class book as well as individual studies of leadership.

The books and art supplies from this project will help me continue to make our classroom a vibrant, welcoming space where student work represents their ownership, accountability and pride in our classroom community. I am devoted to creating learning spaces where every child feels validated, valued and included each year.
