Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are hard-working nine and ten-year-olds, from a predominantly bilingual Spanish-English neighborhood, in the City of Chicago. 97% of my students are from families that are low-income, and all of my students qualify for free lunch. I teach a transitional bilingual class, which means that the majority of my students are English Language Learners.
My students are incredibly hard-working, motivated, and compassionate.
I feel truly lucky to work with them and their families each day.

My Project
I am requesting award-winning novels that celebrate diversity, inclusion, and social justice. I have hand-selected novels that I think are windows or mirrors -- windows into another culture or lived experience in the world or mirrors that reflect the culture of my students.
Many of the novels have received the Coretta Scott King Award, the Pura Belpre award, or the National Book Award.
I want my students to see diverse characters who experience joy, relatable emotions of growing up, and navigating issues of social justice and cultural identity.
I selected a variety of reading levels, so that I can divide my students up into groups of five or six students, and we will meet separately to discuss the book. I will drop off each new set of books to students' homes, so they have access to them during remote teaching, and I will pick them up and swap them out when we're ready for the next book. My hope is that even during remote learning we can have access to high-quality novels that you can touch and take a break from the computer for a bit.
