How can teachers motivate reluctant readers? How can we inspire reluctant readers who are learning English? Finding the right books on the right topic by authors who know the target audience is the key to literacy development in Middle School.
My ESOL students in Middle School face many challenges.
One of them is the challenge of finding books at their level of reading proficiency and at the same time appealing in content and thought provoking in messages.
Gary Soto is a wonderful writer who knows the struggles of teenagers from immigrant families and his short stories and poems are accessible in format for the students who find it hard to commit to a 300-page novels.
My Project
There is an interview with the author in the Middle School textbook I am currently using and I would like to supplement it with the collection of short stories and poems to allow the students to explore the materials mentioned in the interview and evaluate author's work themselves. I would also like them to have the collection Baseball in April as their own copy of the book to build their libraries of quality literature.
Your support of this project would allow Middle School English language learners to develop appreciation for literature, deepen critical thinking skills and help them reflect on the selections based on their own cultural experience.
