Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students ask questions...lots of them. Some are non sequiturs...but most questions are dead on and not accepting of an answer of the status quo.

My classroom is a gifted/highly capable classroom in a suburban school district.

Over the past ten years, the school population has increasingly diversified into a multicultural setting. The students are looking to understand more about the world around them. They are aware of their difference but also see themselves as a community of learners

My Project

The 5th Grade Social Studies Curriculum is simple. Teach the American Experience up to 1791. But it stops there in someways. Who is an American? What makes us an American? If I'm different, am I still American? That's Social Studies, but I'm asking for Reading materials. Those are different, right? No. Throughout the year, my class goal is to have students address those questions, through social studies, through reading, through oral communication, and through writing. This anthology of short stories contains stories of kids like them and their experiences. In short, it is Literary and Social Studies, integrated and applied. My goal is for students to read the anthology and compare/contrast these experiences and ask questions such as the ones above. My goal is for students to look across the stories and see both the consistency and the diversity in the American experience.

Funding this project helps the class look deeper at the American Experience and define who we, Americans, are.

By engaging in these questions early, students will have a framework to begin addressing questions of social justice, change, and fairness.
