I am fortunate to teach a diverse group of students with a strong sense of community and loyalty. Many of my students have hated school for a long time and had given up. However, through various instructional strategies, patience, and care we reinvigorating their desire to learn, building their self-confidence, and setting career and post-secondary education goals.
They have faced adversity and failures many, many times over, but with the help of their teachers, peers, families, and their own self-determination they are striving to earn their diploma and graduate on time at our continuation high school.
Most of my students are looking forward to moving out of their parents' home, working, and being involved in their community when they finish school. Others are looking to continue their education in a college or a vocational/trade training program.
My Project
I teach at an urban, Title I Continuation High School. Many of my students have struggled to succeed at school. Our school shares a library on a neighboring school campus, however, the library is not easily accessible for our students since they are not allowed over unaccompanied during school hours. I have quite a few books that I have kept over the years while I was in middle and high school, but I lack novels and nonfiction titles that are representative of the students I teach. I have selected additional titles for this project that represent their varied cultural backgrounds, as well as titles and genres that my specific classes have expressed interest in.
"The majority of students spend fewer than 15 minutes per day reading, but increasing their daily reading time to 30 minutes can improve comprehension and boost student achievement, according to a new report from Renaissance Learning."
When students can feel a connection to what they are reading, they are more likely to be engaged. Students who are at a lower reading level can improve significantly if they receive high-quality instruction, read books that are of interest, spend more time reading, and encounter more vocabulary can catch up to their peers. I intend to allow more opportunities for students to read in class, especially in my study skills class, so that my students may experience the potential gains of reading 30 minutes a day.
