Multicultural Activities in Kindergarten

My Project

My classroom is comprised of 22 kindergarten students from various and diverse backgrounds, representing at least five different ethnicities. My students are interested in learning about the world beyond their own neighborhoods. Many of my students are first-generation English speakers who serve as interpreters for their families and other students in our school. My students face a variety of challenges beyond the classroom, such as transportation, housing, clothing, and food insecurities. Despite these challenges, my students are excited to learn and grow each day. I love teaching and I am excited to go to school every day! We are a class family where my students care for each other. I have always said that I am on a mission field in my classroom, and I know I am making a difference one child at a time.

Learning to appreciate every person's differences and work together is a critical skill all children must develop to succeed in school and in adulthood.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, many of my students did not attend in-person pre-kindergarten. As such, they have not interacted with other children as they would have pre-pandemic. Sadly, the pandemic has robbed many elementary-aged students of the opportunity to learn the importance of diversity and the opportunity to interact with children different than themselves. These multicultural resources will allow my students to interact with each other and learn to play cooperatively as they learn about the world around them. These resources will help my students develop important social skills and learn to appreciate their differences. All of these resources will be used in our daily play center rotations in the classroom where all of my students learn.
