My Title I school is tucked into a neighborhood. All of the students receive free breakfast and lunch as well as a fruit/veggie snack at the end of the school day. Our students are excited to come to school to learn and interact with their friends. As the reading specialist for my school, I interact with each and every student throughout the week. We love to share and discuss books with one another.
From kindergarten through fifth grade, my students are growing their love of reading on a daily basis.
Students often stop to share with me what they are currently reading. They will stop me in the hall to ask if I have another copy of a book they saw a friend reading. They will thank me for providing new and exciting books for their teachers to read aloud. Students in various grade levels will talk and laugh about books we have read as a school. My students' increasing love of books is growing a culture of literacy in our building.
My Project
Learning to read is hard work! Using multi-sensory approaches helps students master letter sounds and patterns making this process a bit easier. Due to today's circumstances, my beginning readers will be learning to read from home for the first semester of school. While my students will receive materials from our district to help with at-home learning, I want to provide each of my students with a home tutoring kit full of the specific materials we typically use in our classroom to make learning to read a multi-sensory experience.
Multi-sensory teaching and learning keep my students actively engaged in our lessons.
Using WikkiStix to form letters helps my students see and feel the shape of a letter. Printed letters on cardstock tiles allow my students to manipulate letters to make words. Using counting chips helps my students listen for specific sounds in words by dragging a chip for each sound they hear. It is not enough for my students to stare at a screen watching what I do. My students need to have these manipulatives in their hands to actively engage them in building their foundational reading skills.
