My students need binders, sand trays, textured mats, and additional items to support a multi-sensory systematic program for phonics instruction called Orton Gillingham. Students will use tools to kinesthetically learn and experience language.
My students are creative and active learners. The students all have mild learning disabilities including Dyslexia and ADHD. They learn best when they can make connections through auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learning strategies. In our classroom, we celebrate our differences and each other's growth. I am most proud of my students for the environment we create around the growth mindset.
We know the power of yet!
There is always room to grow and learn from one another. We may make mistakes, but this is just a way that we can learn.
My Project
My students all participate in Ortan Gillingham. This program allows the students to learn phonics explicitly through multi-sensory methods. As a rookie teacher, it can be a challenge to fill the classroom space with materials to support the program. Your support will allow me to provide multiple materials for the students to use to kinesthetically experience language. Students will use the shelving mats, canvas, and sand to write. This provides the kinesthetic piece of learning language. This program also requires very specific organizational and data collection procedures; therefore, my students will need to keep all the materials organized using binders, rings, and composition notebooks.
I am excited to use Ortan Gillingham with my students because it worked for me as a student.
As my students do, I struggled in school to read. I was fortunate enough to also be taught using multi-sensory phonics instruction. I love that I have the opportunity to use OG to help my students grow in the same way I was able to learn and feel successful again.
