This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a 1at grade teacher in a Title I school in a Spanish Dual Immersion program in an elementary school in the Salt Lake City area. My students are from various home environments and work so hard to be successful! Many of my students lack phonic experiences in their early years and can struggle with early reading skills. Phonemic awareness and phonics instruction in the early grades has been shown to improve later reading success.

Incorporating mutli-sensory skills can be helpful for students in their learning.

As we learn our letters and sounds, using sensory letter cards, writing letters as we hear the sounds on white boards, seeing their mouths form sounds in mirrors or hearing themselves say the sounds adds sensory input to their learning.

My students would benefit from multi-sensory learning materials that can be used in both whole group and small group instruction.

My Project

The items I have selected will assist my students in using various senses for learning phonics and phonemic awareness.

The microphone will help my students hear themselves repeating sounds, the sandpaper cards will reinforce students letter recognition, the mirrors can help my students see how their mouths should be formed when making sounds, the dry erase and writing journals will be used for students and early writing skills or letters and sounds.

These materials will be used to help all my students academically in whole group and small group instruction.
