This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work in a Title I school in Tampa, Florida. My students are kindergartners and 1st graders who have autism spectrum disorder.

Autism is a part of who they are, not ALL of who they are.

They are thinkers, learners, and listeners. They are friendly, playful, and loving. They are Children. Children who can and will learn and grow. They may take more time, need more resources, guidance and support, but they can...and they will. One day at a time.

My Project

We are requesting feel and find sensory tubs, early language and math file folder activities, sensory balls for flexible seating, phonics stamps and stamp pads, and magnetic letters. These materials will be used for literacy instruction as well as math during small group work and independent workstations. Students will be rotating through centers, some independently and some with support. We will be able to incorporate activities in the areas of phonics, fluency, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and numbers and operations.

These materials will increase engagement and participation.

When students are motivated and engaged with learning materials, it decreases their frustration level and increases their focus and attention to the tasks. Students with Autism have many different and varying skill levels. These materials will help me differentiate lessons and activities to meet the needs of each learner in my class.
