I have a classroom of twenty students that come to school ready and excited to learn in a variety of ways! My 3rd graders are aware that they increase their brain power when they are singing or dancing while learning about math, reading, writing, and science skills. We are a Title I school in rural Kansas and being exposed to digital resources is another way I can maximize my students’ learning and provide my students with another outlet for learning!
My Project
I believe that exposing my 3rd grade students to different modes of learning keeps them engaged so they are learning to their fullest potential. Flocabulary mixes music, reading passages or skills, and exercise which provides students with a multi sensory environment for learning! The use of music and rhyming text as a supplement to reading has been shown to increase acquisition and retention of academic content (Wolfe and Horn, 1993; Wallace, 1994). Donations for a classroom subscription to Flocabulary maximizes the learning potential for all my students, and is especially helpful for my special education students who often succeed with audio as it aids in helping students with pronunciation.
In addition to Flocabulary, I am also requesting a subscription to BrainPop and Brainpop Jr.
because research has shown that students learning in a classroom that uses BrainPop and BrainPop Jr. daily showed substantial gains in the areas of reading, language comprehension, and science (SEG Research, 2009). Students respond to digital resources and animation that BrainPop and BrainPop Jr. provides. The quizzes and other activities that accompany each video challenge students to think critically about the topic. Students love the silly antics of the main characters Tim, Moby, and Annie and often transfer that visual learning to their own written work or classroom discussions.
