Multi-Sensory Learning is Beneficial to Memory

My Project

COVID-19 was a time when interacting with one another and touching was highly discouraged and in many instances forbidden. Children struggled to learn facial expressions, communication skills, and correct speech sounds and articulation due to faces being hidden behind masks.

The absence of these basic human interactions has hindered childrenʻs ability to learn basic concepts such as numeracy, as well as their ability to socialize appropriately.

The materials chosen help to build a multi-sensory experience around numeracy. Research has shown that mutli-sensory experiences fire multiple areas of the brain creating stronger connections with an increase likelihood of memory. In short, the more senses a student uses during instruction; the more a student will learn.

The materials chosen assist in building a studentʻs number sense, which is foundational for more complex problems. Students with strong number sense think flexibly and fluently about numbers. They compute mentally by breaking apart (decomposing) numbers and easily applying math to real world problems. These math manipulatives will help students feel the differences in quantity and build the connection between concrete models to the more abstract numeral.

Everyone remembers those dreaded timed "Minute Math" drills. If you were good at them, you loved it! If you werenʻt so good at them, they were a source of dread. In addition to the manipulatives, various math fluency games were chosen to bring the FUN into mathematical fluency. Many of the math games chosen can be easily differentiated. They will be a great "low floor, high ceiling" game! Beyond the math, students learn how to socialize by taking turns and practice explaining their thinking process.

All of these materials are greatly needed to improve our studentsʻ numeracy and will be used in multiple intervention groups from grades K-6!
