Multi Language Math Learning

My Project

When I was young, I was adopted from Russia by a loving family. They put me in a school where I learned through visual and tactile learning. As a teacher, more than half of my class speak another language and, knowing their struggles, I want to be able to provide many opportunities for them to learn 5th grade math without getting discouraged.

In 5th grade, we expand our learning in multiplication, division, fractions, graphing, geometry, and statistics.

By using magnetic money and base ten blocks, we can manipulate different values for all to see and in small groups. By using counting bears, students can get ideas of how to use anything around their homes to play with math. Once they feel comfortable with objects, we can use magnetic numbers to create mathematical sentences and real world problems. Further, they can easily see patterns in math if we have access to manipulatives.
