My students are from an Appalachian community steeped in tradition. These students want to succeed to meet their own educational goals and the hopes of their extended families. We emphasize civil discourse and investigative inquiry.
At my school, we work to bring distant horizons closer and build understanding for other perspectives through reading.
It is a great privilege that I teach world literature, which permits students to see broader perspectives and helps to make them empathetic to the world around them.
My Project
Choice is one of the most important aspects to facilitate student engagement. In a classroom, even at the high school level, it is essential that students feel they have control and voice in their thinking and learning.
These novels will allow students to select an area of interest for them which they will read, research, and write about through multiple genres.
Students will select a book, read it to better understand contemporary world issues, write research, and engage in creative responses as well, including poetry, prose, and visual interpretations of this world issue. If we want students to see the world as plural, they need to engage in literature that shows the plurality of experience.
