Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Please help the most deserving first graders in the world! I am a first grade teacher in Illinois. I teach the 24 coolest kids who just love to learn! My students live in a high-need, low-income community and lack resources for academic enrichment.

I want to take my students on a tour of the world through the Cinderella story and other multicultural literature. My students come alive when we learn about things that are real and have meaning to their lives. I would love to give my students the opportunity to become more fluent and confident readers through the study of multicultural literature and other cultures. In addition to teaching literacy, teaching with multicultural literature will allow me to teach character development.

I need different versions of the Cinderella story as well as other multicultural literature (Asian, Native American, African American, and Hispanic). Some of the goals of this unit will be to improve comprehension, questioning skills, critical thinking skills, and character development. To reach these goals I plan to incorporate interpretive discussions, character studies, comparing and contrasting stories and cultures, and writing.

You will make it possible for my students to get outside their small neighborhood in Chicago and see the world from the perspectives of people from around the world and from years past. This will be an invaluable experience for my students, as their perspectives on themselves and the world around them will likely be changed.
