This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My K4 children love to work and play in our courtyard garden. It was established four years ago as part of the Green Schools initiative in Milwaukee. The entire courtyard had previously been covered in asphalt, it is now an outdoor classroom and garden. With the removal of the asphalt, the courtyard provides the city with a green space that can absorb water as opposed to having it run into the sewer system. This helps to prevent flooding of the sewers when we experience flash floods. Unfortunately after four years of use, the garden pathways no longer have any mulch.

Our garden is in grave need of mulch, this project would be a starting point that could both benefit the entire school, as well as possibly inspire other classrooms to participate in community service projects.

My students are high energy and would love to take on a community service project of mulching our garden paths. We have gloves, shovels, and radio flyer wheelbarrows that are K4 height that are perfectly suited for a mulching adventure! It may take us many days to accomplish this task, but I think the children will be very proud of their efforts when they are finished. If the youngest students in the building can take on rejuvenating the garden paths, imagine what everyone else could do!
