My Project

My students have taken very well to bucket drumming. It has been so much fun over the past several weeks to see them grow as musicians, learn and retain vocabulary words, different rhythmic notes, and rest values. They really have learned a lot, and they continue to want to learn more.

I don't know if you know this, but drums are LOUD!

My 3rd through 5th grade classes are quite large - over 20 students in each class. When they are all practicing at the same time, it is very difficult to hear themselves, each other, and my directions. It is also hard to hear the phone and the public address system, which could pose a safety risk. We also want to be good neighbors to the surrounding classrooms. I'm sure the drums of thunder would make it very difficult to concentrate! The drumstick mutes will make it so much easier to accomplish all of those tasks!

Additionally, drumsticks do have a tendency to break with repeated use. My students have been taught to use them carefully and not be too rough, but when you are playing against a plastic bucket and on the rim of that bucket, it is unavoidable that sticks will eventually break. The drumsticks in this project will serve as replacement sticks when the others break.
