Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My Favorite part of teaching students is the A-ha! moment when they make the connections being taught in the lesson. This project empowers students to connect chemistry, mineralogy, and physics to the aesthetics of ceramic ware. By exploring clay body composition using Red, Black, white clay bodies, and water's role (chemistry & mineralogy), they'll understand plasticity and forming forces (physics). Investigating drying (physics & chemistry) and firing transformations (chemistry & physics) reveals how these sciences dictate shrinkage, color, texture, and durability. Through hands-on activities and analysis, students will grasp how scientific principles directly impact their artistic outcomes, fostering intentionality in their ceramic creations.

I can not wait to see their faces light up when they observe, feel, and calculate the color, textures and shrinkage that take place.

We will be making organic shapes incised with patterns. To finish them of they will add stain to fill in the patterns on the fired pieces. The final touch will be to use jute and a dried out tree branch to hang them from. This will add sound and pitch to their learning experience.
