Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

As a first year teacher I had no idea how to teach nor decorate a room that was conducive to learning. It wasn't until I had the opportunity to go on a learning walk, visiting other teachers' classrooms, that I realized how warm and inviting a classroom could be. Something as simple as using lights other than the overhead fluorescent lights seemed to create a noticeable calm in a room full of teenagers. After experiencing other classrooms, it got me excited about the potential of my own room. I immediately started a pinterest board and was able to find many ideas, using lighting as the center of my inspiration.

Now that the school year is winding down and coming to an end, another thing that I have been made painfully aware of, is that we are in desperate need of basic supplies like markers, wipes and more.

Having the privilege of working in an underserved community, one of the things that stands out the most is that some of our students aren't in a position to afford basic school supplies, like pens, pencils, and art supplies. Having a classroom set of markers and pencils, will help to ease that load and provide the opportunity to make art in science. I enjoy teaching lessons, where students are able to use their creative imagination to connect the dots. In our genetics lesson, my students were able to learn how traits are passed from parent to offspring, and then draw the offspring based on the passed down traits. The lesson was entitled "Monster Genetics." My students had a good time being creative and I even noticed their test scores for the test were higher than the previous test scores.
