We all come from different walks of life and my students are no different. Some weeks are harder than others, especially in the current economy. My students all have different levels of access to high need things from shelter to hygiene. I find that it is most helpful when my classroom has resources that everyone needs to maximize the time students are in the classroom.
One of the number one causes for girls' lapses in education around the world is a lack of access to menstruation products and often the products that are provided at a lower cost are not as comfortable.
Additionally, students often do not have the funds to purchase their own toiletries or they forgot things at home. Sometimes families do not have the funds to have their hair done.
My students come from all over the world as refugees, as immigrants, and as locals, but they just want to be kids who do not worry about how they look and access to the things they need each day. By having deodorant, hygiene products, baby wipes, hair gel, toothbrushes, and other things in my classroom, I am able to ensure that my students have one less concern in their day to day life.
When I was in foster care, one of the greatest changes in my life was being able to walk into the kitchen or bathroom and know everything that I needed was there and I didn't need to ask permission to access it. Having a care closet on each floor of a building, and in as many classrooms as possible, allows for this level of security.
