My Students

My students are full of personality, super creative, and they absolutely love art class and making art! They really love to collaborate, teach each other, and don't mind getting their hands dirty. They're always curious about what I have planned for them in class everyday, and they take each challenge head on.

Although my students love art and have fantastic ideas, they don't always have access to the supplies necessary to make them happen.

Our school is located in South Baton Rouge, a diverse city full of culture and vibrancy, but with that comes a wide range of socio-economic backgrounds and limited opportunities.

Every single child in my class deserves a chance to make great art, and with some help, I'd love the opportunity to give it to them.

My Project

These supplies will be used to teach an art lesson centered around identity. I want the students to experiment with shape, and color to create their initials in paper using the quilling technique.

Students will use the colors and shapes of the paper to reflect their individual identity, and will be able to choose to represent how others see them, or how they see themselves.

This project will not only allow me to have a better understanding of my students, but for them to better understand themselves and their classmates. Identity and self-expression are concepts that I'd love my students to have a chance explore at such a young age, through a rather unconventional artform.
