This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are amazing! Six of my classroom chairs are mine from home because my overcrowded classes required students to stand up. My AP Biology students can only perform half of the College Board mandated labs because of lack of funds for supplies. And yet they achieve excellence every day!

My colleagues and administrators work so hard to fight institutionalized racism and to inspire, support, and prepare students as they consider college.

While we may not have all the supplies we'd like, we are overflowing with passion, dedication, and respect for our students, and we have produced measurable results. For example, I found out yesterday that our rate of African American students enrolling in 4-year universities is nearly double that of the rest of our school district. I am so proud of our students, and honored to be among this staff, but I know we have a lot of work left to do. I would like to see ALL of my students leave here with all the skills and confidence necessary to break down any and all obstacles put before them, in college and beyond. I don't just want our students to be intellectually prepared in comparison to other students of similar backgrounds. I want our students to be intellectually prepared in comparison to everyone!

My Project

Having an Elmo in my classroom would make a huge difference! At the moment, my only projector is a very old overhead projector that will only display images on transparencies. I cannot demonstrate to a class how to use our web-based program to check their upcoming assignments and progress reports, and advocate for themselves. I cannot project an animation of mitosis or transcription or any other scientific concept that is so hard for anyone to understand from still photos of phases. I cannot model microscope procedures in a way that all students can see and learn from. And I cannot bring students up to share their work with each other without wasting valuable class time transferring their work to transparency paper. An Elmo would make all of these things possible! On a personal note, my eyes have really been bothering me lately from looking into the light at the base of the overhead projector so often, and I would love to be relieved of that.

"Studies show that information can be more easily retained through the use of digital images." The addition of an Elmo would make this possible by facilitating my students' retention of information and also their familiarity with technology, thus allowing them to compete with more economically advantaged peers in college.

Please help bring my classroom, and therefore my students' education, into the 21st century!
