Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work in a Title I NYC school. Title I schools are in high need areas. The students at my school face many struggles both inside and outside of the classroom, yet they are resilient and eager to learn. As an Occupational Therapist (OT), I service students with special needs ranging from autism spectrum disorder to ADHD, sensory processing disorder, dysgraphia, and learning disabilities. This project was created to help our students cope with their emotional, physical, motor, and sensory needs by giving them gifts that/'' brighten their day. My goal is to provide students with the resources they need to enhance their participation and independence throughout the school environment by showing them they are cared for and thought of.
My Project
All of our students want to learn as well as have fun learning in school. Some things are controllable and others are not. Hunger is! This snack project will help my students receive a boost of energy and motivation needed when learning and to stay alert while in the school environment to keep their minds focused and their little tummies full.
A lot has changed since the beginning of the pandemic including their lunchtime schedule and sometimes they need a picker-upper to continue with their day.
Our students are noticeable more engaged in their work when they have a little snack by their side as they are working.
Just think about it, why do we have popcorn and snacks at a movie theatre?
Well to make sales, but also to keep us engaged as we watch the movie. I can see how the past project of "It’s Snack Time!" has positively influenced the work habits and demeanor of my students. This will be greatly appreciated by them!
