it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are amazing! They know that success requires effort. My school is filled with promising students that I trust to be the leading generation of tomorrow.
I always aim to make our classroom a special part of each student's day, in ways that hopefully increase their confidence, effort, and determination.
It is important to encourage good attendance habits early each school year. Coming to school consistently is mandatory because gaps in learning from absences/tardiness are tough to heal. Our cafe-style seating and behavior beverage bar is a measure used to reduce tardiness because students want a delicious treat and their favorite seat in the class. The rule is, no saving seats - so show up early! Making a classroom inviting, interesting, and functional is part of students looking forward to school.
There is no eating in our 9th grade Algebra 1 class but beverages are allowed and welcomed (hydration is important for thinking/learning). Using PBIS points, students can purchase water, capri sun, coco, tea, fidgets, stickers, rainbow scratch paper, and more. Purchases are only made before class so it encourages early arrival. Differentiate seating is fun and allows students to sit in varied group sizes and preferred location in the room... if they get to class on time.
PBIS points are earned by excelling in five categories: mindset, accountability, teamwork, engagement, and respect. Students are rewarded individually and can shop in teacher's stores with their points. Class periods earn points collectively. Each month, one of my class periods wins a pizza party. The group points truly help minimize class-clowning and disrespect because peers complain about not winning monthly parties (they are FUN). This will be my second year using this points system. Students responded extremely well last year so I'm excited to step it up this year!
