Help me give my students a text that allows students to feel represented as a hero. Ms. Marvel is one of the most meaningful characters today that will make a graphic novel course a more inclusive classroom.

My Project

Ms. Marvel is one of the most relevant characters in graphic novels today. Her relatability to all youth is immediately felt when read. Even more so, the importance of her identity and what she represents is something all my students can connect to. After finishing the first volume, all students became engaged with her journey of self-discovery and could not stop reading! I couldn't leave my students with a cliff hanger. Volume 2 wraps up Kamala's first ever story arc.

I am so excited to show how Kamala's journey of self-discovery relates to all of my students figuring out their place in a complicated world.

Ms. Marvel is the ideal story for the graphic novel course to expand vocabulary, engage students who struggle with reading, and for students to have fun building their writing skills. The combination of art and words in this text generates powerful student discussions, including many who struggle to share their voice in a classroom.

Since piloting a graphic novel class last school year, Ms. Marvel volume 1 was easily one of the favorites according to students. My students across the board all completed the range of assignments, produced some of the best grades all school year, and had every brilliant reaction while reading that the creator's could hope for; laughs, gasps, and most all a strong relationship to the text. Being able to have the final part of this story arc will no doubt continue these trends. By having the complete storyline available for students, I have no doubt the outcomes will continue to be marvelous.
