My Students
My students are avid readers who love to read Non-Fiction books! They love to learn new facts and information by reading Non-Fiction texts. The students would use these books to read for pleasure. Additionally, they would use these books for research projects.
My class is comprised of 28 students in second grade.
The students have been identified as Gifted and Talented and is the only class of this nature on the grade. We are located within a diverse neighborhood school. Many of my students are first generation Americans. Their families come from all over the world and many of my students only speak English in school. Our school is a Title I school, where the majority of our students receive free or reduced price lunch. As a result, funds are limited for classroom supplies, especially technology. The school has over 1,300 students.
My Project
My students love to learn and they love to get their knowledge from books. My students have an interest in Non-Fiction books and learning real facts about a multitude of topics. My classroom library has many "Animal" books and this project would increase the amount of History books in my classroom. My students frequently ask for more Biography books such those in a Biography Book Set where they can learn about historical figures who have overcome many obstacles to achieve their goals. They are also interested in learning about explorers, inventors, and scientists and how they created the world we live in today. The students will use these books on a daily basis during Reading Workshop and Independent Reading. Furthermore, my students develop presentations based on research, and this cycle's theme is "Biographies". These books would provide great resources for their projects.
You can never have enough books!
Reading is an integral part of the learning process because it allows children to think about others, as well as themselves. Non-Fiction books in TIME FOR KIDS(r) Nonfiction Readers provide the children with a plethora of information that they might not be able to receive first-hand. Non-Fiction books allow children to explore foreign countries, the tiniest animals, and the lives of influential people. These books would expand my students' knowledge about the world we live in!
