My students need these amazing books for our classroom library and art supplies, as many have none of their own. The color printer would allow those without internet at home, to print pictures and other materials!
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My students are creative, clever and very spontaneous.
They like to move, they love to read and love lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My Project
My students often come to class without even so much as a binder, much less great books and/or art supplies. Because I encourage such a full range of creativity, I would love for my students to know what could actually happen with so much readily available.
Also, reading is absolutely crucial to critical thinking and is the catalyst for all other subjects.
Due to the minimal budget and the size of our county, the school library is limited, or is often out of the few popular books titles to be share among the grades. Having a strong and versatile classroom library would not only provide books, but promote literacy with their constant availability.
Lastly, having an individual printer in my classroom would allow students who need differentiated instruction to have a hard copy of what we may be doing online. Also, for those with no at home internet access, having a printer would allow them the opportunity to create, develop and see the finished products for online research and projects.
The bean bags will be added to the reading area, where students can quietly read or study in a cozy environment. Again, this will promote literacy and will encourage independent reading.
