Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

My students come from low-income families. Most are bilingual and receive free lunch. Many of the students are not able to go outside after school because they live in neighborhoods that are too dangerous. Their parents attempt to keep them safe by keeping them indoors so that their only release and activity comes from attending school. Even in the worst weather conditions, many of the students come to school to escape their homes, receive love and attention from the staff, and eat breakfast and lunch.

They face many obstacles in life and school is their only source of freedom, expression and enjoyment. At school they are able to safely interact with adults and peers. They come from areas where there is little leadership and a community that does not take the time to know and raise them. With all these obstacles, these students still strive to receive good grades and awards for their accomplishments. They deserve opportunities like every other child, but need help from others to do so.

Many of my students come in wearing clothes that either do not fit them or are not clean. They are usually one of many children, having several siblings and limited clothes to wear between them. They are uncomfortable with their appearance, which hurts their ability to concentrate on their work. Their insecurities create huge obstacles for them. Many of them become depressed and have difficulty socializing because they do not feel comfortable. Image and appearance is huge, not only in school but in the work force. Students need to feel good about what they are wearing so they have a positive outlook on life. This project will clothe students who have very little and would like to participate in gym and class. Developing confidence is difficult in the 8th grade, and this project will allow them to feel good about themselves.

In Their Own Words

I would like to participate in gym and school. My parents do not have a lot of clothes so I would like to receive some items in order to perform well in all my classes. I want to help my classmates feel good about themselves. If we are dressed nicely, we are more likely to do well in the classroom!

I would like to get clothes for myself and my friends. It is hard to get clothes that fit me and I know many of my classmates also have a hard time. I want to be a voice for my classmates. We are all in need of help! My teachers are always telling us to ask for help when we need it.

This project is important to me because if I am well dressed and taken seriously I am more likely to achieve. I would like to feel good and do well, and dressing is a major key to success. First impressions are important both in school and the community, by dressing well we are representing our school and ourselves.
