Ms. K, I wish we had a computer, 8th grade student
We need a way to compete with the technological revolution by having a computer in the classroom.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Kyle's classroom raised $1,762

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
About My Students
My students come to school with hopes and aspirations of bettering their lives; in order to do that, they need access to technology to explore the world outside their poverty-stricken communities.
My students watched the movie "Stand and Deliver" as inspiration for succeeding in math. The movie takes place in Los Angeles. The school is full of Hispanic students from working-class families who are way below their grade level in terms of academic skills and have a lot of social problems. Mr. Escalante (their teacher) seeks to change the school culture to help the students excel in academics. My students can relate to this movie because of their scores that are below grade level and their social problems. My students really enjoyed the movie and some of the strategies taught by Mr. Escalante. They wanted to learn more math strategies and asked if they could research different math problems or real world situations they were curious about and find strategies for solving them. Although I was able to provide them with multiple strategies, the students said they wanted to work in groups to do more research and attempt to write their own lesson and strategy.
Incorporating technology into the middle school mathematics curriculum is advocated not only for increasing student interest but also for preparing them for jobs in the 21st century. The students need to learn to use a computer in college and their future careers. They need to be able to research information and deliver it to an audience. This project allows and encourages them to communicate in groups and work with one another to share information with their peers/classmates/co-workers. This project will allow them to research mathematical strategies and develop knowledge on topics that can help them in real life situations.
In Their Own Words
We are trying to look up math tools and ideas to help us remember math in real life situations. In the movie, Mr. Escalante used his fingers to figure out the nine times table. Strategies like this help me to remember math and I would like to look up more and teach it to my classmates. Some of our classmates also have questions about things we haven't learned this year, such as using percents to tip or finding the best deal (percentage off).
The class plans on looking up different strategies to help with math skills. My teacher made some suggestions and an outline for a lesson. We will look up different things we can use to help us with math and then teach each other. I don't know how to tip someone correctly so, I was hoping to learn that and teach it to my classmates. Others wanted help on balancing a check book, determine how much should companies pay their employees using linear equations, and other real life situations.
It is important that we are motivated to learn. Allowing us to research topics of interest and share with each other gives us knowledge and encourages us to communicate. Many of my classmates have real life math questions and want to learn different things that are coming up in our lives as we go to high school and become members of our community.
