Ms. Jones' Baby Simulation Project

My students need storage boxes to store the babies, baby clothes, blankets, diaper bags, and other equipment used in the "Baby Think It Over" infant simulation experience.

My Students

My students are from a diverse, urban high school. Our city is an old mill-town in New England with a population of 61,000. It has been the home of immigrants since its heyday as a city known for it's shoe mills. It continues to be the home of many immigrants trying to make the American dream come true through education and hard work.

Our public school district is a Title-I district with a poverty rate of 47%.

Our high school has 1,800 students, 805 are considered High Needs and 611 are economically disadvantaged. Some students are long-time residents of Greek, Irish, and Italian heritage whose families have lived here for generations. Many are newcomers from places as far-flung as the Dominican Republic and El Salvador to Egypt and Zimbabwe. Although the high school does not have the financial resources of the more affluent surrounding towns, there is a deep sense of pride here. Many of my students will be the first in their family to go to college. A few will be the first to graduate from high school. I'm very proud to teach in this resilient, working-class community.

My Project

Students in my Child Psychology elective participate in the Baby Think It Over simulation. Students take an electronic baby home for three days/nights for a realistic parenting simulation. The parenting simulation activity is the highlight of the class since it began a few years ago.

This simulation gives my students a realistic sense of how hard parenting is and encourages them to "Think It Over" carefully before becoming a parent.

The 61 Quart storage boxes we requested will be used to store and protect the equipment and supplies (baby clothes, blankets, electronic babies, diaper bags, car seats) for this simulation. Right now, everything has been donated and sits in garbage bags and cardboard boxes in a dusty book room. We have no budget for extras like storage bins. This entire project was built from used equipment and donated supplies.
