My Project
Where children's hearts go, so, too, go their minds. Especially in the special education role I am in, engagement is the hardest fought battle in the classroom. For several years now, I have introduced my 8th grade students to the life cycle of the Monarch butterfly as a way to illustrate and allude to their own journey from child to young adult. This cross curriculum topic ties in to science, conservation, art, literacy, and agriculture. The unit is tied with the graphic novel "Hope for the Flowers" by Trina Paulus, (as requested on my shopping list) as well providing topic and experience for potential writing projects such as informational essays. My request list contains the necessary tools to create a classroom butterfly hatchery. Milkweed, the monarch's food, help both beautify our school and support populations of migrating monarchs. Enclosures provide space for developing monarchs and caterpillars away from natural predators and poisons that they encounter outdoors. Clear containers provide nursery space for eggs and first instar caterpillars. Test tubes and stands allow the availability of live milkweed cuttings in the enclosure as well as plant propagation for the students to take home. The document camera allows for close observation of the subjects and stop action footage in order to make the process more viewable. It also allows student to share their experience on a wider platforms than just here at school.
There is a magic in watching transformation; we can't help but transform right along with the butterflies!
I have seen the most apathetic teen boy light up just by holding the miracle of a butterfly. For the four years I have done this, I have watched uninvested young people transform into engaged and interested learners, feeling connected to the world outdoors as well as to their community. Help us fly!
