My students need hands-on multiplication and division kits to help visualize such an abstract concept. Students learn so much better when they are able to put their hands on what they are learning.
I have had the opportunity to teach my lovely bunch two years in a row. They are an amazing mix of personalities, learning styles, and backgrounds. They work hard, play harder, and love so big! I teach two classes of 3rd grade math and science. We strive to make our classroom a second home and a second family. Every day we work on strengthening our relationships and working together as a team to help each other grow and learn. These students have taught me so much in the last two years about respect, learning, growing, patience, and love.
My Project
Hands-on manipulatives are vital in a math classroom. We have a great need for students to understand abstract concepts in depth and the only way that will happen with this age group is by placing items in their hands that they can touch and move to help with comprehension.
The materials and supplies that I am requesting for my students will be used to give a concrete learning experience.
I will use the Hands-on Multiplication and Division Kits to give students a better and more concrete example of multiplication and division. The Magnetic Math Manipulative Library will be used in our hands-on station during daily rotations. I will change the manipulative to match the TEK and unit that we are on. The Magnetic Write and Wipe Board will give my students a specific place to go and use the magnetic manipulatives. The Fraction Number Line Write and Wipe Boards will be used to help students visualize their learning correctly and keep their thoughts organized on one of the hardest TEKs we teach all year. I will use the privacy partitions not only for privacy during testing but also for students who have a difficult time concentrating in class and would like a place to be by themselves. All of these items will be beneficial in whole group learning, small group learning, and peer tutoring. With students being able to use more hands-on materials they will have a better and more concrete learning experience.
