Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This is my first year in first grade.Every morning, my students come in excited and ready to learn. They love learning through the use of hands on activities. Our school follows the responsive classroom approach. Responsive Classroom is a research-based approach to K-8 teaching that focuses on the strong link between academic success and social-emotional learning (SEL). My students rotate throughout 5 stations during our literacy block. This is called the daily 5. They generate interest and excitement through their own guided discovery. Having flexible seating, and grade level materials would help them stay engaged, interested and on task. I would love for all my students to be reading on level by the end of the year. Right now, my biggest challenge is getting them there with my lack of materials. All my students have a passion and love for learning. They are bright young individuals who needs hands on materials to help them succeed.

My Project

We need phonics, word building, and sight, word, and alphabet hands-on activities for literacy stations to enhance their reading skills. Each item will take my students beyond paper and pencil to make learning engaging and fun! With these hands on literacy activities, my students will be focused word word, reading fluency sight words, sounds and writing. For example, the beginning sounds activity box and alphabet sounds teaching tubs will help my students learn their letter sounds in reading and phonics which is an enriching, hands on and fun. All the letters and magnets will be used as manipulatives which are as important as having a visual alphabet around! These small pieces are set the stage for reading, writing, visual discrimination, and more literacy foundations. Word Building, sentences and literacy games will help my students independently learn how to read, write and provide them with age appropriate social skills. Since this is my first year in first grade I lack the materials and resources needed to help my students achieve and succeed. All of the resources will make for an enriched environment that is engaging and differentiated. he materials I am requesting will help the students in my classroom with decoding, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension.

My students who need extra help in reading will benefit greatly with word works activities on their reading level, and the students who are able to read on grade level will utilize the vocabulary and reading comprehension center activities.

They will work in these literacy stations for 30-45 minutes per day while I meet with students for small group guided reading instruction. The other activities will keep the children engaged and focused while targeting specific reading needs. They will spend 15 minutes at each center daily.
