My Students
I am a 4th grade reading teacher in Dallas Texas. I only teach reading to 45 children.
I have two reading classes with 20 children.
The first class has 19 students. Their reading abilities vary greatly. Most of my students are reading very high level books. They absolutely love reading Diary of a Wimpy Kid books. I have one child that has taken one book home and read the whole thing in one day. She read at lunch and recess. They are very interested in reading. My second class is also very interested in reading books of all levels. They beg me to let them take books home so they can read all day and night. I try to keep up with their interest but I am having a hard time giving them the high books they are wanting. I have only have one Diary of a Wimpy Kid book and they have to wait for one child to be done reading it so they can read it.
My Project
My students need 22 books to improve literacy including Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Dork Diaries. The books I am requesting are going to be "Read to Self" books. All of my students will have one book they can read until are done. I do small group instruction every day. When I am teaching a small group, I have two groups of students working on writing or read to self. They may also be reading to someone. My students will use the books to practice their comprehension skills and fluency by reading to themselves and reading to someone.
I work at a school with a free or reduced lunch rate of 100% which means that 100% of my students have been determined to be living in poverty.
They do not have access to books at home. Most of my students have never been out of their neighborhood and don't have many experiences. The books that I am requesting will provide them with literacy experiences that will help them experience the world through books. These books will build their reading fluency and comprehension.
