This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are current 4th graders in Chelsea, MA. We have been practicing remote learning since March 13th. The students in my school are consistently eager to learn and enthusiastic about new and exciting learning opportunities, despite the challenges that they face outside of the classroom. Our north of Boston district has been hit especially hard by the COVID-19 virus. This "hotspot" has displaced many families from their jobs and homes, and it has ended classroom schooling for the rest of the year. Most of my students are on free-reduced lunch and don’t have access to even the basic supplies that they need to be successful learners at home.

Here's some more information about our school community:

-95.4% of students are minority

-86.7% of our students are Hispanic

-83.8% of our students are low-income

-88.5% of our students learned English as a second language

-Our students are from 39 countries and speak 21 different languages.

My Project

I am looking to gather basic classroom supplies that I can send to my students that will help them as they complete the tasks and activities that are being made available daily. Many of the activities require students to write out their work. I utilize many different strategies and supports to help my students extract the most from each learning experience. Distance learning has been a challenge for all of us. Our hands-on learning materials are not available to us. Thus, since remote learning I have been working hard to make our lessons exciting and accessible to all my students. Many of the families of my students did not have wifi or an appropriate device for distance learning. We are now at 100% attendance and each child is so excited to see one another, but they miss school. Even so, school is not the same and having these basic materials will provide familiarity to our students during remote learning. These students are struggling with not being able to say goodbye to their teachers, classmates, and school due to the 4th grade graduation being canceled. In these bags, students will get online learning essentials as well as a fun mad lib to cheer them up as they deal with the pandemic in Chelsea.
