My Students

My class has 22 students. We have a diverse student body in ethnicity and ability. I have English Language Learners and students who struggle in other areas. All the students work very hard at setting meaningful goals, maintaining motivation, and not letting their behavior negatively affect their learning.

Many of my students have home situations that make learning a challenge and even attendance can be a hurdle.

Creating exciting educational opportunities and experiences is paramount to reach some of my reluctant learners. We have done some great work in Reading, Writing and Math as well as kindness and self-control. Future projects will support progress in these areas.

My Project

Help me give my students a similar experience to what teacher Erin Grunwell gave her classes as outlined in the movie "Freedom Writers". By reading the same novel they did, and recreating the project of writing their own journals in composition books, the students will learn history, write a personal narrative, and find their voice.

Writers write what they know, and what do children know better than their own life?

By reading a diary of a girl not much older than themselves, they will have many instances to relate and make connections to their own lives. Reading the historical journal will encourage the students to write their own stories.
