My Project

My classroom is technically called Kid Connect and it exists for the sole purpose of teaching children with Emotional Disturbance how to regulate their brains in preparation for academic learning. It works.

The tools, activities, and supplies listed in my DonorsChoose Project aid in this endeavor.

Using the five senses is a critical part of the process so you will see materials that activate their senses. My caseload for next year includes students that I have been teaching for 3-4 years, and I know new materials will ignite curiosity and thus use which equates to improved regulation. These materials are used throughout each school day but in particular at arrival and breakfast. Students often arrive in a state of dysregulation with their basic needs not having been met.

In particular, the puppets are needed for Social Skills lessons that take place at least once a day officially, but social skills teaching happens throughout the day in my class. Using puppets takes the attention away from specific students and allows us to work through issues in different ways to see varying outcomes.

The bookcase is a dream. I work in an impoverished community, and we do not have the luxury of new furniture when needed. My current bookcase is held together with glue and hope! A tidy and organized classroom does create a healthier and happier environment.
