Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a high-school special education teacher in a small farming community in the Central Valley of California. My students vary widely in their abilities. I have several autistic students, students with traumatic brain injuries, students with emotional and attention disorders, and students born addicted to drugs. You name it, I have it.
Our school has a very low income population and many come from migrant and field working families.
They live in labor camps and have very little money. I try to incorporate things into my classroom that they would normally never see or be exposed too in their lives.
It is my dream that even though these students struggle tremendously they will still get an opportunity to experience things that their peers do in a general education setting.
My Project
Students enjoy the use of our classroom hygiene products. However, they are in need of their own personal supply-pack to use at home. My students are distracted by the odor that invades our classroom. I will use the materials: deodorant, soap, lotion, etc. in conjunction with the hygiene lessons from the school counselor to help promote students being their healthiest and happiest self!
Providing my students with life essentials will help to improve students' self-esteem.
No longer will students feel ashamed of their body odor or appearance. These supplies will help show my students that people care about not only their learning but also their personal wellbeing.
