Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In our community, most of our students lack access to equipment and spaces that promote a healthy lifestyle. As a new PE teacher, I want to make sure that I am able to provide my students with access to different styles of exercise to encourage them to find physical activity that they enjoy and that makes them feel good!

This year, we are beginning with our very first yoga class, to provide a space for students who may not enjoy traditional physical activity, to show that there are many ways to be active and healthy that they may not know about.

I also want them to experience the mental health benefits that activities such as yoga can provide. It is important that I make sure that our classroom environment is peaceful and a safe space for students who may have a negative perception of PE to go. The yoga items will help me to make a welcoming space for my students in which they can enjoy our class while learning healthy lifestyle habits that will last far past high school.

In addition to our yoga classes, I also teach our athletic weights and football weights classes. As these students are athletes, I want to ensure that they are equipped with the proper equipment to lift safely and effectively. As of currently, we do not have access to weight lifting accessories that allow our athletes to lift heavier weights with adequate support. Weight belts, straps, and cushions will help support our weight room to be a safer space for athletes trying to reach new goals.
