Mrs. Osorio and Mr. Heim's Students Have Something to Say!
My students need the book Stella Diaz Has Something to Say to gain perspective on the immigrant experience. We will be doing an ELA and Social Studies unit on immigration.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Third grade is my favorite grade. I feel it's the year they really become readers who will discover different viewpoints and perspectives. They get to know characters as if they were meeting real people - being able to describe them, predict their actions and decisions, and the consequences that come from them. They will opinions about the worlds they will be journeying to through books. It's truly an exciting year!
“It is time for parents to teach young people early on that in diversity there is beauty and there is strength”― Maya Angelou.
The students in the school all reside within the neighborhood. The students come from diverse backgrounds culturally and socially. They have much to learn from each other.
My Project
Two 3rd grade classrooms will be doing an ELA and Social Studies unit about immigration this school year. We know that this is currently a hot topic in our current society.
We feel it is important for our students to understand the immigrant experience in order build understanding and acceptance of cultural diversity.
We plan on teaching this unit early on in this school year because the immigrant experience is similar to being in a new classroom. Students can connect to the novel, Stella Diaz Has Something to Say, because they too will have to adjust to a new environment, with a new teacher, new classmates, and new expectations. Another reason we feel this unit is important is because within the unit students will be learning the reasons immigrants have come to this country (or other countries.) They will also learn about each other's diverse cultural backgrounds and in some cases why their families have immigrated. Each student brings with them different traditions and perspectives.
