My Students

One of my favorite quotes from Audrey Hepburn reads, "To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow". The students in my Environmental Science classes each year believe just that. Located in a rural community in South Carolina, my students are surrounded by acres of crops such as corn, cotton, and watermelons, as far as the eye can see.

As a third year teacher, my administration has given me the privilege to adapt our Environmental Science coursework based off of the types of jobs in our community.

Since our town is located near the Savannah River Site and immaculate farm land, this is every Environmental Science teacher's dream.

The soon-to-be student environmentalists I teach usually walk into my classroom needing that extra science credit to help them graduate. These students come from all different paths of life, some of which are actually interested in an environmental career, while some just need a mental break from rigorous classes and other factors at home.

The assignments in my class are largely project-based, with a class favorite being working in the school gardening area.

My Project

These gardening tools would allow my students to develop hands-on gardening strategies that will last a lifetime. While technology plays a huge part in our every day lives, using our hands to grow our own food will never go out of a style. The opportunity to work in a school garden gives high school students the mental break they need from pressures at home and school. When they are outside, they get ninety minutes of fresh air and an opportunity to create something beautiful the whole school can enjoy.

Developing and maintaining a school garden also gives students a sense of pride in their accomplishments.

Students are able to see their work right before their eyes each day we walk outside to the garden. In previous years, students from other classes have also helped us in our school garden, which is an especially spectacular opportunity for camaraderie. With the recent hybrid schedule implemented at our high school, I'm brainstorming ways to ensure both virtual and hybrid students can enjoy our school garden or a similar hands-on opportunity!
